Grand Junction is home to an increasing number of cultural opportunities. For the artistically inclined, there is the Art on the Corner program, the Western
Colorado Center for the Arts, Mesa County Community Concert Association, Western Colorado
Chorale, Grand Valley Children's Choir, the Grand Junction Centennial Band, the Grand Mesa Sweet Adelines, the Grand Junction Symphony Orchestra (shown here playing an outdoor concert at lovely Sherwood Park), plus many seasonal festivals.
If the theater arts attracts you, you'll be interested in the newly restored Avalon Theatre, which now hosts numerous concerts for all types of music. To learn more about the Avalon, click here. Grand Junction's school district No. 51 serves the community through thirty public schools. There are 25 public and 4 private elementary schools, 10 middle schools, and 4 high schools. The district employs more than 1300 teachers and has a student enrollment of more than 19,000.
At the secondary level, Grand Junction is home to Mesa State College, a 4-year school with a wide range of degree programs, including a Masters degree program in business administration. Degree programs are also offered through Colorado Christian University, a private collete. There are also a variety of technical schools in the valley.
Grand Junction sets a high priority on green areas where families can enjoy their time together. Nearly every neighborhood has a neatly maintained park, often more than one. From large to small, Grand Junction's parks and open areas are one of the least dramatic, but most appreciated, features of a city that welcomes family togetherness.
Among the city's newest parks are the newly opened Canyon View Park. Some other major parks with sports facilities include Lincoln Park, Columbine Park and Kronkright Park.
Grand Junction has been the home of the world-renowned Junior College World Series for over fifty years. Drawing teams from all over the country, JUCO is the highlight of May as Grand Valley residents get to see college-level baseball competition as the teams battle it out for the national junior college championship.
Mesa County is the medical hub for Western Colorado and Eastern Utah.
In this regional role we host three accredited hospitals and rehabilitation
centers that feature state of the art facilities and equipment, as well
as emergency transport services. In addition, there are a number
of care programs for the elderly.
The largest hospital is St. Mary's, a licensed facility with 346 beds, with a Level II Trauma
Center with Air Life emergency transport service and a Level II Neonatology
Center.
Grand Junction has a high ratio of doctors to population, boasting 190 specialists and 60 family practitioners. The community also has extensive facilities for the care of our senior residents, with 14 nursing homes and many retirement living centers.
The Grand Valley's mild climate produces some of the best orchard fruits in the country, especially peaches. However the same climate has made the valley ideal for grape orchards, and Grand Junction is fast becoming known as Colorado's wine country, with 8 wineries, each featuring its own varietal specialties. To get to know our wineries better, tastings and tours are offered and make for a pleasant afternoon's diversion.
Grand Junction is the transportation center for Western Colorado, and is situated
approximately 260 miles from Denver, Co. and Salt Lake City, Utah on Interstate
Highway I-70.
Walker Field is a modern all weather airport. Congestion and weather
related delays, common in major urban areas, are rare at Walker Field. Major and regional airlines (including United, Delta/Skywest, and America West) serve Salt Lake City, Phoenix and Denver with numerous daily flights.
Grand Junction is also on a primary Amtrack route.
